The SD Gundam G Generation line is a huge sub-franchise all on its own as part of a much more massive, all-encompassing Mobile Suit Gundam franchise of video games. The former sub-series is also a part of the SD Gundam line, which has many non-G Gen games and started much earlier in 1990. They tend to be of the tactical RPG variety (Think the Super Robot Wars line, but enclosed in the Gundam universe only). On the other hand the normal Mobile Suit Gundam video games tend to be of the action type.

There have been 28 G Generation game titles all the way up to the first one in the series on PS4 & PS Vita. Interestingly enough, none of those “G Gen” software before that first “G Gen” PS4/PS Vita game had ever been officially localized into English. 1 title was an expansion and 3 were either remakes or quasi-remakes. 8 titles were multiple versions of 4 games, so there are 24 unique titles in all.

Up until 2016, there were few newer Gundam games translated into English, and almost all of them were Dynasty Warriors: Gundam/Gundam Musou titles. While attempts were made to translate both World and Overworld at release, they failed due to technical complications that could not be overcome at the time.

Then, in June 2014, the project was revived by izzul95 on GBATemp, who managed to access many of the text files required to pull off a translation. What followed was a roughly 2 and a half year effort to translate thousands of words and decipher many of the complexities of the game’s programming. See here for a large media collection.

Almost everything is translated. The only major exception is the huge libraries database, which is not worth it according to the team.

FAQ

Q. Is all the text in the game in English?

No, there’s a huge in-game database full of facts about mobile suits, ships, and characters that hasn’t been translated, because it’s simply too huge for one translator and editor to handle it. All the other text you’re likely to encounter has been translated into English though.

Q. Why should I play this when G Gen Genesis exists?

This is the only G Generation game that’s in English and has material from the Alternate Universe shows like Wing, G Gundam, SEED, and 00, plus Gundam F91, Crossbone Gundam, and Victory Gundam. G Gen Genesis only features Universal Century units up to Hathaway’s Flash, with the exception of a DLC unit or two and the G Gen original units.

Q. Are there any bugs we’re likely to see?

There are probably going to be typos, because the project has essentially been running with one editor working on dozens of files for 90+% of its length. There is also a persistent display error caused by PPSSPP removing Sony’s PSP font from its files – Turn A Gundam’s name in game will appear as “_ Gundam.” To fix this, you need to dump the font file from your PSP and place them into \ppsspp\flash0\font.

Q. How come some things look way nicer with the various graphics patches, and others don’t?

The graphics patches pulled assets from console versions of prior games, which were made to a higher quality standard than anything that’s exclusive to Overworld. Since Overworld is a PSP game, lots of graphical sacrifices were made to make sure the game fit onto a UMD.

Q. How do I get custom background music to work?

For PSP users, follow this guide: http://www.ggenoverworld.com/index.php?title=Custom_BGM_Guide

For PPSSPP users, try creating a /MUSIC/ folder inside the memstick directory, then create an OVERWORLD folder inside the music folder, before using the in-game Custom BGM function.

Also, try using ID3KILL to remove tags, since the game doesn’t seem to like them.

Q. I’m a PSP/Vita player and I can’t get the HQ Texture Pack to work! What’s wrong?

It’s a PPSSPP only feature and you’re on a PSP or Vita.

Q. The game is crashing after attempting to load system data?

Update to a newer CFW firmware. Pro 6.60 is confirmed working.

Q. My Mid-Battle saves aren't working after patching?

Unfortunately this a byproduct of the patch itself and how the saves work. We recommend you finish any stage you're on prior to using the patched copy of the game.

Q. Help, I'm playing the Vita and it won't work!

If you're using the Vita you can play it with Adrenaline.
