Project M is a community-made mod of Brawl inspired by Super Smash Bros. Melee's gameplay designed to add rich, technical gameplay to a balanced cast of characters while additionally enhancing the speed of play. Project M employs new codes which seamlessly add in new, universal features to the entire cast to add technical variety to all characters.

The goal of the project is to achieve a game similar to Super Smash Bros. Melee in many respects. It does not, however, intend to be a 1:1 Melee clone. The following is a list of the main aspects of Super Smash Bros. Melee that inspired and have carried over into Project M:

  • A fast-paced game.
  • With flowing, natural movement.
  • Where the player has a great degree of control over their character due to the technical skill that they've achieved.
  • The balance of offense and defense changes depending on the exact matchup and playstyle, but overall tends to favor offense slightly.
  • Offstage edgeguarding is risky but rewarding, while on-stage edgeguarding is safer but less rewarding.
  • Recoveries generally require great skill to use, with the advantage usually being with the edgeguarding player, with some exceptions.
  • The combos are challenging and spontaneous, with anything longer than 2-3 hits requiring a knowledge of both characters' options and some degree of prediction and/or a deep understanding of the mental aspect of the game.

Project M only supports NTSC versions of Brawl, and no PAL build was ever released. As a result, running Project M outside of NTSC regions requires either homebrew as to allow the Wii to run an NTSC version of the game; or an imported Wii.

Installation

Project M offers different versions: The Full Set and WiFi.

  • The Full Set has Stock Control and Input Assistance as new features, which allows newer players to use advanced techniques better and have a stock advantage over experienced ones. However, for WiFi (online play) and Replays to work properly, the WiFi version is recommended.
  • The WiFi-Safe set does not differentiate between L/R lightpress and full press or have C-stick buffering, nor does it have Stock Control or Stage Strike. The PMDT recommends you play with the Full Codeset unless you're specifically using WiFi/Replays.

You may switch between these two builds simply by replacing RSBE01.gct, the menu2 folder, and the system folder.

Requirements

  • Brawl Discs and Wii's (NTSC only).
  • Your SD card must be less than or equal to 2 GigaBytes in capacity to use Project M.
  • Note: The Project M installation includes both music and textures as part of the standard package. If you have custom content on your card, it will be overwritten.

How to install

Note: The instructions are for the Hackless method. If you're using a Homebrew method, simply delete any previous version of Project M, extract the files to your SD card then boot Homebrew and select the Project M Launcher. If you are using the Installer, you will prompted to select a package to download.

  • Delete any custom Brawl stage files on your Wii and SD Card (Brawl comes with 3 pre-made ones).
  • Delete any previous version of Project M from your SD Card and make sure the card itself is not named "Project M" or any derivative thereof.
  • Unzip the file and open the folder that comes out, or use the Installer to download and generate the folder instead.
  • Move the contents of that folder to your SD Card.
  • Remove any GameCube Memory Cards.
  • Boot up Brawl and go to the Stage Builder.
  • The Project M Launcher will boot; select Launch Game.
  • You will see a straploader saying Project M 3.6. Additionally, if your menu image looks like the image below, then go ahead and play and enjoy Project M.

Known issues

Project M is a mod for the game Super Smash Bros. Brawl that focuses on the competitive aspect of the game. However, this focus can lead to errors and abnormalities in non-competitive aspects.

For example, replays may become corrupted or fail to work properly, fixed-camera mode may be off-center on certain stages, and the mod may freeze when players try to pick certain characters in Tournament Mode.

Additionally, certain glitches can occur when using debug commands or playing in All-Star Versus mode. The Subspace Emissary mode also has several issues and glitches. Additionally, there are glitches specific to the Pokémon Trainer character and when using Codec Conversations on Mewtwo or Roy.
