A fan-made English language patch for Hakuouki SSL: Sweet School Life (薄桜鬼SSL ~sweet school life~) made in association with the Otogelib Translation Community.

Hakuouki SSL is an otome game released in 2014 as part of the Hakuouki franchise.

It is a PS Vita exclusive entry that has not been localized into English. As of the time of writing, no official companies such as Otomate or Aksys have announced that they are going to publish or localize the game on other platforms.

Features

  • What is translated:
    • All of the story content of the game has been translated (about 95% of the game).
  • What's not translated:
    • The audio, graphics, and song lyrics in the introduction video.
    • The keyboard for entering the heroine's name.
    • The audio for Happy Voice extra content in the game.
    • Some of the minigame hints and instructions, especially in Chapter 5.
    • Some miscellaneous dialog boxes.

Installation

Requirements:

  • Hacked PS Vita, with at least 1.8 GB of storage space free for the patch.
  • A copy of the game Hakuouki SSL (PCSG00297).
  • rePatch plugin installed.

To install, extract archive to ux0:rePatch/.

User guide

Tips

Though it is not required, it is recommended installing vita-savemgr. Vita Save Manager is an app that will backup any save you may have: in the case that you need to completely delete SSL during troubleshooting, all your progress can be backed up and restored via this app.

Here you can find an English Cheat Sheet, which contains translations for vital sections of the game. If you ever find yourself faced with unknown Japanese text in SSL, check the Cheat Sheet before panicking.

FAQ

Q. What sort of routes are there? How do I achieve all the available endings?

There are three kinds of routes in SSL, each with their own endings:

  • Main love-interest (LI) routes (Hijikata, Souji, Saitou, Heisuke, Harada, Kazama) - Bad ending, Good ending. Best ending.
  • Side-character/LI routes (Sannan, Nagakura, Yamazaki) - Bad ending, Good ending.
  • Non-LI routes (Kaoru, Sen & Kosuzu, Ibuki) - One ending.

As for how you can achieve all these endings, we have a spoiler-free spreadsheet walkthrough as well as a walkthrough on GameFAQs outlining the choices you have to make to get each outcome.

There is also one minigame per chapter in SSL, and some requirements for the endings depend on whether you win or lose a certain number of minigames.

Q. Do I have to play every minigame each time I do a different route?

There is no route in which you do not encounter the minigames in question. You will also have to play all the minigames at least once in your first playthrough of the game.

However, there is an item you can buy with in-game currency (i.e. points in Ryuunosuke’s Shop) called a minigame skip ticket. This is typically made available after your first playthrough of SSL.

The skip ticket gives you the option to skip playing any minigame you encounter – if you choose to skip a minigame, you have the further choice of selecting whether you win or lose that minigame.

In short, using the minigame skip ticket, you don’t have to play the minigames every single time to achieve different endings in other routes after your first playthrough.

For this reason, it is recommended that you play Souji’s route first, as your love interest’s minigame will not appear in the final minigame rush, and Souji’s is by far the hardest.
