OpenTyrian2000 is an open-source port of the DOS vertical-scrolling shooter Tyrian 2000, rewritten in C using SDL3 to run natively on multiple platforms including Nintendo Switch, Windows, macOS, iOS, and ESP32-S3.
The project faithfully recreates the fast-paced space combat gameplay of the original, where players control Trent Hawkins, a fighter pilot battling the MicroSol Corporation to save the galaxy. The SDL3-based engine allows high performance and broad device compatibility without DOSBox emulation.
Installation
Download the latest release from the GitHub Releases page.
Extract and copy opentyrian2000.nro to:
- sdmc:/switch/opentyrian2000/
Place the original Tyrian 2000 data files (tyrian21.zip or extracted data folder) in the same directory:
- sdmc:/switch/opentyrian2000/data/
Launch the game using the Homebrew Menu.
Controls
Left Stick / D-Pad = Move ship
A = Fire primary weapon / Confirm in menus
B = Toggle rear weapon mode / Back
X / R = Fire right sidekick
Y / L = Fire left sidekick
Plus (+) = Pause
Minus (-) = Open Game Menu
