Gameplay

Heart of Darkness is a platform game that follows a cinematic style similar to Éric Chahi's Another World. The main character, Andy, embarks on a journey to find his beloved dog, Whisky, amidst a world full of dangers. The game progresses through a linear storyline, and the player must solve puzzles and navigate through various environments while protecting Andy from malicious shadows, wildlife, and perilous obstacles.

In addition to basic movements such as running, jumping, and climbing, players can also access certain sections of the game where Andy acquires new abilities. One of these abilities is the plasma cannon which allows Andy to shoot lightning and disintegrate shadows. Andy can also use special powers to offensively destroy trees grown from seeds. Players have unlimited attempts, with the game returning Andy to the most recent checkpoint after death.
