Deep Dungeon is a roguelike built in GB Studio for Game Boy Competition 2021.

Installation

User guide

Long ago, an ancient evil brought monsters into the world.

Humans lived in fear of the monsters, until three heroes appeared. Through their efforts, the ancient evil was defeated, and its essence was sealed away in a dungeon.

Many years passed in peace, but slowly, monsters returned. Now the villagers live in fear, waiting for the evil to return.

Once again, the call for heroes arises. Will you be able to lead your adventurers into the dungeon, and vanquish the evil once and for all?

Game setup

To begin a new game of Deep Dungeon, you need to create an Adventuring Party of three characters. During this party creation, you're presented with four options. These options impact the initial challenge of the game, but they don't influence the overall difficulty of encounters.

  • EASY - You get 4 stat re-rolls, +1 primary attribute, 150 gold.
  • NORMAL - You get 2 re-rolls, +0 primary attribute, 100 gold.
  • HARD - You get no re-rolls, negative bonus, 50 gold.
  • RANDOM - Classes, stats, names randomized in NORMAL setup.

Character creation

How to create a character:

  • Select a Job - Choose between Fighter, Thief, Cleric, or Wizard. Job impacts attributes, skills, armor, and more.
  • Roll Attributes - Six attributes from 3 to 18, randomized. Can re-roll within limits.
  • Enter a Name - Provide a name up to 6 letters, or get a random name.

Jobs and characteristics:

  • FIGHTER - High HP, ATK. All weapons/armor. No magic.
  • THIEF - Agile, steals, moderate ATK. Some armor/blade weapons.
  • CLERIC - Holy Spells, moderate HP/ATK. Heavy armor.
  • WIZARD - Magic, low HP/ATK. Robes/cloaks, dagger/staff.

Attributes:

  • STR - Physical combat effectiveness.
  • DEX - Agility, defense, flee, steal.
  • CON - Toughness, HP.
  • INT - Magic effectiveness, MP.
  • WIS - Holy Spell boost, secrets discovery.
  • CHA - Social influence.

Items and equipment

Items:

  • Potion - HP restoration.
  • Elixir - MP restoration.
  • Panacea - Remove status.
  • Key - Unlock doors/chests.
  • Rope - Cross chasms.
  • Torch - Scare monsters, flee.
  • Bomb - Destroy walls.
  • Holy Symbol - Revive ally.

Equipment:

  • Weapons - Damage dealt in attacks.
  • Armor - Base defense before modifiers.
  • Shields - Additional armor (Fighter, Cleric).
  • Accessories - Special abilities (2 max per character).

Spells

  • Cleric Spells - Cure Wounds. Cause Wounds, Cure Disease, Cause Disease, Blass, Bane, Raise Dead,
  • Wizard Spells - Magic Missile, Shield, Fireball, Sleep, Reveal Secrets, Lighting Bolt, Confusion, Portal, Disintegrate.

Overworld locations

  • Town - Shops for items, weapons, armor.
  • Camp - Rest, recover, save game.
  • Dungeon - Source of all the evil monsters terrorizing the townsfolk, full of dangerous hazards.

Dying in Dungeon

  • Characters with HP reduced to 0 = dead.
  • Dead characters can't take action in battle.
  • They can be resurrected with Holy Symbol or spell.
  • Characters cannot be saved if they remain dead after a battle ends. Flee if necessary.

Select - Special Action

Start - Open menu
