Story

A group of nameless adventurers travel to a new land called Arpeejy Island. Once there, they meet a mysterious masked man who has a curious interest in their development as heroes. And that's pretty much it. The rest of the story is up to you ,the player.

ClaFan is a semi-open world adventure; there's no set path to take, what happens next is all up to you. So, grab three other friends, and go on that adventure.

Modes

ClaFan has two gameplay modes, and they are self explanatory:

  • Adventure Mode - The main game, split up in two parts; the overworld, and the action stages.
  • Training Mode - A practice area where you can test out your character.

Overworld

ClaFan has an overworld map that you travel on, picking your destination in a retro-RPG style. The only buttons used in the overworld are the directional keys.

In addition, you will find different colored markers on the map. Below is a key explaining what each marker is:

  • Green - Quest stages. Someone needs help, you help them, and you get a reward.
  • Blue - Towns. Here, in you can switch characters, and heal.
  • Grey - Survival battle. Fight through waves and waves of monsters.
  • Light Blue - Fields. Sort of like towns, without character switching and healing. You can explore and talk to NPCs.

There are also hidden stages in the game! You can find them in the World Map, in Towns, and in Fields. Pay attention: some NPCs may give you hints as to their location.

In Battle

Once you've chosen a stage, the game switches to a side-scrolling beat 'em up. While all of the characters have different moves and playstyles, the controls are the same for everyone. Below is a list of all the keys used, and what they do:

Arrow keys Walk in the direction you pressed. Press forward twice to run.
Jump Self explanatory.
Attack The main offensive button. For most characters, keep pressing it to perform a combo. Note that the Attack button can be used both on the ground, and in the air.
Chain The alternative offensive button. The Chain button is used to perform secondary attacks. The timing of when you press the Chain button alters the type of attack you perform. To be specific, Chain will do different moves when you press it; before an Attack, immediately after an Attack, and in the air.
Block This button is to guard against enemy attacks. Note that you can still be hit from behind while blocking. If you press the Block button while walking/running, you will do a dodge roll. Your character is temporarily invincible while dodge rolling, so be sure to master this technique. Lastly, if you press the Block button while your character is in their pain animation, you will perform a counter-attack.

Be sure to set up the controls in Options > Control Options > Setup Player #.

Also, look at the included "controls-clafan.png" image for my personal recommended control scheme. If you use the PSP OpenBOR folder that came with ClaFan, it'll have this control scheme by default.

Tips

New to the world of ClaFan? All this nonsense of "chains" and "combos" are too complicated for you? Play as the Onion Knight.

Certain characters are best for certain situations, and all characters are unique. For example, the Fighter is a good all-around character for beginners, while the Dragoon is the best aerial fighter.

Normal enemies can be hit an infinite amount of times in the air. Bosses can only be hit 5 times in the air. Some bosses are too heavy to be knocked in the air.

Experiment with characters to find the one that's right for you. Belmont may seem like a useless character, but if you use him right.

Remember, you can switch characters in-game when you go to a town.
