New Super Mario Bros. 5: Clone Tag Team 2 is the direct sequel to MarioFanatic64's New Super Mario Bros. 5: Clone Tag Team. It revolves around the use of a Clone that imitates Mario's actions, essentially enabling the ability to control two characters at the same time.

Clone Tag Team 2 is the second part of The Eternal Star Saga, it features more creative and daring level design, the graphics are cleaner, and there is a new musical soundtrack. With 81 brand-new, completely original levels.

Features

  • Story continues where Clone Tag Team 1 left off.
  • This time, Mario has to rescue Princess Daisy.
  • The Clone will be interacting with a lot more complicated stuff.
  • Whole new soundtrack imported by Storment.
  • New elements to build on the Clone gameplay.
  • In order to 100% complete the game, Luigi is required to access areas that Mario and the Clone can't.
  • Vice Versa, the Clone may be required to reach places that would otherwise be inaccessible.
  • New Boss Rooms. No more boring old NSMB Bosses.
  • More Dynamic Level Design.
  • Significantly more content than Clone Tag Team 1.

Installation

This Double Pack contains two full-length custom made modifications for New Super Mario Bros. DS:

  • New Super Mario Bros. 5: Clone Tag Team (original released 2012/07/12, v1.3.1 released 2014/10/31).
  • New Super Mario Bros. 5: Clone Tag Team 2 (original released 2014/07/17, v1.0.1 released 2014/10/31).

This hack was produced with the US version of the NSMBDS ROM, but the patch should be functional with all regions. Note that you'll have to patch each file individually to play both games.

The patches are in xDelta format. You can apply the patch with xdelta UI:

  • Extract one of the .xdelta patches from the .zip folder.
  • Run xdeltaUI.exe and for Source File, select your NSMBDS ROM.
  • For Patch File, select your desired patch (Clone Tag Team 1 OR 2, not both at the same time)
  • For Output File, select an appropriate directory and name your file. The file extension must be .nds.
  • Click Patch to generate the modified ROM.

Story

After returning back to the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario and Princess Peach celebrate the success of Mario's last adventure dealing with the Clone. However during the celebrations Bowser and Bowser Jr. appear, amazingly unharmed. They successfully capture Princess Peach again and with no way to find where she was taken, Mario doesn't know what to do.

Mario luckily happens upon Professor E. Gadd, who has the solution. E. Gadd used his Time Machine to see how Bowser and his son were revived so fast. The reason was that the Bowser and Bowser Jr. Mario battled in the last adventure were Clones, like Mario's.

While Mario was disctracted by his Clone Adventure, the Koopas had kidnapped Princess Daisy. As their plans went unfoiled, they could then move on to Princess Peach. Gadd's solution to the problem is to go back to Mario's last adventure, and undergo a different quest; to save Daisy rather than Peach, and in the process defeating Bowser to alter the Mushroom Kingdom's grim future.

Gameplay

There are two options for gameplay. You can choose to play the standard version in which a Clone will be alongside Mario in 36 levels of the game, or you can play as Luigi (by holding L+R on the File select screen) to play Clone-free.

Both versions have their benefits and it’s up to you how you want to play through the game.

Trivia

  • Clone Tag Team 2 was the first New Super Mario Bros. hack released to have each level individually named.
  • Clone Tag Team 2 has many small Easter Eggs scattered around the levels.
  • Clone Tag Team 2 has a reference to the Mario series' end in the story's ending sequence, where Mario's future is hinted.
    • Despite this, there are some Time-Travel related paradoxes that were deliberately left in the story so Mariofanatic64 "had something to answer if I wanted to".
  • That statement was actually a hint to Clone Tag Team 3, before MarioFanatic64 decided that the series had come to an end and refused further sequelization to the series.

NSMB5: Clone Tag Team 2 - Release Trailer (Hack) (MarioFanatic64)

Compatibility

You can play it using an emulator (such as No$GBA and DeSmuME depending your computer's specification) or using a Nintendo DS/3DS flashcart like R4DS or Supercard DSTWO.

Known issues

ROMs modified in NSMBe cannot work with Download Play (Mario vs. Luigi), which is a known problem that comes with most NSMBDS hacks. While it is a fixable error it reduces flashcart compatibility, which may stop the hack from running on your flashcart. If you're using an emulator there is no way to play Mario vs. Luigi mode at all.
